Cybersecurity: chances for investors
Cybersecurity is developing dynamically; attractive investment opportunities are opening up for investors worldwide.
Subject | Subject | Description | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Subject | Digitalization and networking | Description | More digital processes and cloud services increase the area open to attack and create new security gaps. |
Subject | Regulatory pressure | Description | New regulations, such as the EU’s NIS2 Directive, which has been in force since the beginning of 2023, require companies to significantly strengthen their cybersecurity measures and implement comprehensive protection strategies |
Subject | Flood of hacker attacks | Description | Phishing, ransomware and malware are putting companies and government agencies under increasing pressure. According to the “Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2024”, users of Microsoft cloud services alone are exposed to over 600 million attempted attacks every day. |
Subject | Critical infrastructure protection | Description | Whether energy supply, health care or logistics – all of these areas are classed as so-called critical infrastructures. Cyberattacks on such systems pose a serious threat to national security. |
Subject | Enormous losses | Description | According to estimates by Cybersecurity Ventures, the global cost of cybercrime is expected to reach USD 10.5 trillion in 2025. Experts predict that the monthly loss could rise to USD one trillion by 2031, which is more than Switzerland’s annual gross domestic product. |
Cyberattacks such as malware and ransomware are commonplace. Accordingly, the global market for cybersecurity is growing rapidly and, according to Precedence Research, is set to increase by 12.6% annually to USD 878.5 billion by 2034. Government investment is driving growth. Infrastructure protection is expected to become the dominant security type, while defense and the public sector are expected to achieve the largest market share.
IT security is essential in all industries. There is a particularly high risk in the health care sector, as sensitive data is involved and supply failures can have serious consequences. In 2023, the health data of around 11 million patients was stolen from US hospital operator HCA Healthcare.
To protect Europe’s digital infrastructure, the EU Cyber Solidarity Act came into force on 4 February 2025. The aim is to strengthen the EU’s capacity to detect, prepare for and respond to major cybersecurity threats and attacks. The law provides for a security alert system consisting of Europe-wide interconnected operation centers. A total of EUR 842.8 million is available for cyber protection measures.
Digitalization is advancing rapidly in Switzerland, which means that cybercrime is also on the rise. The “Digital Switzerland” strategy focuses on information security and cybersecurity, in particular raising awareness, protective measures in everyday life and the administration’s ability to withstand crises. Companies are investing more in security: In 2023, 54% were planning a higher cyber budget. In 2024, this figure was 70%, and 67% expect further increases in 2025.
Cybersecurity is a key issue for the economy and security today and is also becoming increasingly important for investors. Technological progress and new legislation are driving long-term investment trends in this area.
Investors can invest directly in companies such as Palo Alto Networks or Check Point Software or use ETFs, certificates and funds. Palo Alto relies heavily on AI-based security platforms and acquired Protect AI in 2025. Check Point also offers innovative protection solutions with the Infinity platform.
Both companies are part of the Solactive Global Cyber Security Index, which comprises 43 companies (as of July 2025), mainly from the USA. The index can be tracked cost-effectively via tracker certificates in CHF and USD.
