Your will and inheritance contract remain valid until they are revoked – provided that they have been drawn up correctly, dated, and signed or certified. However, your asset or family situation may change over time. This was the case for Bruno S. (55), for example. He suddenly realized that his previous will was no longer suited to his new family situation. Today, he no longer wants to divide his estate between the people mentioned in his original will.

A lot has happened in Bruno S.’s lifetime. He is now divorced from his wife, and his grown-up children have become independent. He and his new partner alternate between houses in the Zurich Oberland and Arosa.

I met my new partner after my divorce. I don't want to get married again, but if anything happens to me, I want her to be well looked after.

If you want to bequeath your assets as provided for by law, you don't need to do anything. But if the legal regulations do not correspond to your wishes, you need to take action. Just like Bruno S. Because without any testamentary dispositions, as things stand his current partner has no claim on his estate in the event of his death.

Bruno S. has written a will. Once a will has been drawn up, dated and signed, it remains valid until it is revoked or modified. But Bruno S. needs to be careful: he wrote his will earlier on in his life – making his former spouse and two children his heirs. Unless he updates his will, his current partner will not receive a share of his assets when he dies.
