Of course, employees have opportunities to build new skills in their daily work and through opportunities like stretch assignments, special projects, internal mobility, and both formal and informal mentoring relationships.
Training is also a regular part of everyone's experience. We have numerous courses in leadership development, business education and practical training, plus specialized courses for specific divisions, regions and roles.
Employees at all levels can access eLearning and in-person training through UBS University, and we mandate completion of certain specialized modules on conduct, risk, finance and compliance topics. These trainings add up. In 2017 our permanent employees participated in:
- around 765,500 development activities
- an average of 12.2 training sessions per employee
- an average of 2.3 training days
Knowledge is what sets us apart and keeps us flexible and competitive, as a firm and as individuals. Learning plays a crucial role and at the center is UBS University, a one-stop shop for all learning and development at UBS. Its offering ranges from online and in-person training to help all employees and line managers develop their professional skills, to highly specialized training and certification programs for specific business areas and support for lifelong learning. In total, we offer more than 2,400 e-learning and classroom-based trainings.

Our leaders are change agents for our ongoing transformation. Our annual Senior Leadership Experience (for top leaders) really drives home the links among business strategy, effective leadership and the firm's values. People leave knowing what it takes to win in our business and have new tools to engage their teams. Likewise, our Senior Leadership Program (developed with IMD) helps ensure managing directors with line manager responsibilities are aligned with our strategy, values and expectations.
High achievers in mid-career roles are prime candidates for "key talent" training. ED Accelerate targets executive directors, building our leadership pipeline and helping participants prepare for more senior roles. High potential directors and associate directors are invited to Ascent, an intense 12-month program featuring collaborative projects that find solutions to sponsors' real-time business issues.
Global demographic changes mean that many people are working longer, and doing so in a rapidly changing environment. That makes ongoing training and personal development more important than ever. We have a number of classes, events and initiatives that target experienced employees across the firm. One example is a suite of lifelong learning programs for (age 45+) employees in Switzerland – including specialized learning, personal career planning sessions, and training in information and communication technologies, networking, languages, social media, networking and multi-generational collaboration.
