What is skimming and how can I protect myself against it?
Skimming involves reading data from the magnetic strips on cards at ATMs that have been tampered with, copying it onto counterfeit cards, and finding out the PIN. These cards are then used to withdraw cash or make cashless payments in non-European countries.
Here are some tips for protecting yourself against skimming and other attempts at fraud:
- Keep an eye out for unusual devices on the ATM or payment terminal before you insert your card into the card reader.
- Cover the keypad of the ATM or payment terminal when you are entering your PIN.
- Never accept assistance or allow yourself to be distracted when you are withdrawing cash or making a cashless payment.
