1964 – Born in Shanghai during China's Cultural Revolution
1987 – Arrived in West Berlin to study, becoming part of first generation of Chinese musicians abroad after Cultural Revolution
1990 – Professional conducting debut at age 26 on tour in Germany
1997 – Founded the Beijing Music Festival
1998 – First Beijing Music Festival held
2005 – Led first Chinese symphony orchestra tour across North America and Europe
2006 – Brought Wagner's complete Ring Cycle to China for the first time
2008 – Led China Philharmonic Orchestra at the Vatican, performing for Pope Benedict XVI
Present – Continues as Music Director and Artistic Director of China Philharmonic Orchestra and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra; Chairman of Beijing Music Festival
