Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about online payments with the new 3-D Secure and a UBS Credit Card or Prepaid Card.

General information

The 3-D Secure process is a service from Mastercard/Visa and UBS, which offers you additional protection against the unauthorized use of your credit card or prepaid card for online purchases at participating retailers.

As part of this service, you are asked to confirm card payments for online purchases conveniently and securely using the UBS Access app or a text message code.
Change as quickly as possible from your current, static 3-D Secure password to the new, dynamic process.

The new 3-D Secure is available to you if you fulfill the following requirements:

  • You have a UBS Credit Card or Prepaid Card.
  • You have a smartphone or mobile phone.

To use the new 3-D Secure process, you need UBS Digital Banking. Choose from the following options:

You can easily register your credit cards or prepaid cards in UBS e-banking under "Cards > Self-service > Register card." Please follow the instructions in e-banking.

Using the new 3-D Secure with the UBS Access app

You need the UBS Access app and a smartphone to be able to use the new 3-D Secure.

You can use the new 3-D Secure right after you have successfully activated the Access app. For online purchases made at participating online shops using your UBS Credit Card or Prepaid Card, you are requested by a push notification on your smartphone to confirm your online purchase using the Access app.

Using the new 3-D Secure with a text message code

You can also use the new 3-D Secure with text message codes. To do so, you need to save a mobile phone number in e-banking. Navigate to "Settings > Cards > Self-service > Mobile phone number for security messages" and save your mobile phone number.

The password-based 3-D Secure process is being phased out and replaced by the new, simpler and more secure identification process with the UBS Access app or text message code.

If you already fulfill the requirements for the new 3-D Secure processes, use the UBS Access app or have entered your mobile phone number for security messages, you are automatically registered for the new 3-D Secure and no longer have to confirm online purchases using a password.

Otherwise, we will tell you how you can register for the new processes when making online purchases and in e-banking.

Many online shops rely on 3-D Secure to increase security for card payments. Previously, a 3-D Secure password was required as proof of identity for payments in these shops. A static password has two disadvantages: you have to make a note of it, and scammers can easily find it out through so-called phishing attacks. It is no longer necessary to enter a static password when you use the UBS Access app or a text message code. This is not only easier for you but also increases the security of online payments with UBS Credit Cards or Prepaid Cards.
