European Union Anti Money Laundering Package

1. Introduction

The EU Anti-Money Laundering Package introduces a single, harmonised Anti-Money Laundering (AML) framework across the European Union, replacing previously fragmented national rules with consistent EU-wide approach.

The objective of the reform is to strengthen the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing, enhance transparency and ensure that the same high standards apply across all EU-regulated banks. While the new framework does not change products or services, it will progressively strengthen requirements related to customer due diligence, beneficial ownership transparency and the ongoing accuracy of client information.

Implementation of the EU AML Package will be phased through to July 2027. Throughout this period, UBS will support clients and seek to apply the new requirements in a proportionate and risk-based manner, with the aim of minimising disruption.

What this means for clients

At this stage, no immediate action is required. However, over time, clients may see the following practical effects:

  • AML and KYC requirements will be more consistent across EU banks
  • Requests for clearer and more standardised information, particularly regarding ownership and control structures
  • Increased expectations around keeping client information accurate and up to date
  • For certain non-EU structures interacting with the EU, new transparency or registration requirements.

Most changes will apply from July 2027 and UBS is preparing in parallel to ensure that client impacts are managed efficiently and proportionately.
