We are also embedding artificial intelligence across our operations to foster innovation. This lets us provide smarter, more efficient, and highly personalized services, ultimately enriching the overall client experience.

Our approach

AI at UBS

We aim to become an AI enabled financial institution where all our stakeholders such as clients, employees, and shareholders benefit from AI-powered tools, and where we build AI-driven capabilities to maximize our impact in a responsible and sustainable way.

Building on more than a decade of experience in AI, our strategy is focused on reshaping business capabilities for clients and boosting daily productivity for employees.

We operate in a Hub and Spoke model. The Chief AI Office (CAIO), as part of the Group Chief Operating Office, sits at the center of this effort, bringing together strategy, governance, and execution whilst the Business Divisions and Group Functions own delivery and outcomes. CAIO provides firmwide coordination, with dedicated accountability for AI governance, regulatory engagement, and AI Capabilities enablement.

We are consolidating AI platforms into a single strategic UBS AI platform, providing shared AI capabilities and a common foundation that business divisions and functions can extend to address specific needs. The platform, named UBS Claves, offers a range of models, from lightweight to frontier, with automated routing that optimizes performance and token costs. We are also strengthening AI evaluation capabilities to support consistent governance, measurement, and value tracking.

Responsible AI

Our AI Principles

Trust is at the heart of everything we do, and this has never been more critical in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). We develop, adopt, and operate AI based on clear principles: respect for human autonomy, prevention of harm, and a commitment to fairness and transparency, all underpinned by our risk-aware culture, Code of Conduct and Ethics.

AI Policy framework

We support our AI initiatives with robust governance and control frameworks designed to safeguard the interests of our clients, employees, and all stakeholders. Our Group AI policy defines clear standards and requirements for developing, adopting, and operating AI responsibly. Dedicated AI governance bodies, including the AI Operating & Risk Committee, have accountability for overseeing the execution of our AI strategy, enabling the integration of AI across the firm while ensuring strict adherence to our AI risk framework, regulatory and compliance requirements, internal policies, and ethical guidelines.

All employees receive mandatory annual training in the responsible use of AI, with ongoing additional training for specialists.

Building AI capability at scale

UBS is building AI capability at scale through a coordinated upskilling program that combines foundational AI learning for all employees with role-specific specialist training for leaders, managers and technical professionals.

Foundational learning is available to all employees through a mix of offerings such as the AI Citizen and AI Enabler learning journeys, Global Learning Weeks, AI Power Hour and online AI courses. Adoption is tracked enterprise-wide: more than 38,000 employees have completed AI learning journeys; since 2024, more than 49,000 employees have enrolled in AI-related online courses; and 2026 Global Learning Weeks included 56 AI sessions, more than 45,000 enrollments and 12,000 employees participating in role-specific AI training programs. By July 2026, more than 21,000 employees had earned the AI Citizen badge (28 percent of employees) and more than 96 percent of managers had completed the initial AI Enabler stages, with outcomes validated through assessments and digital badging.

Role-specific specialist training is delivered through targeted pathways, including a completed senior leadership AI program with reported adoption metrics. For senior leaders, the AI Senior Leadership Journey covers responsible AI leadership, strategic decision-making and enterprise adoption; approximately 1,300 senior leaders, including the Group Executive Board, have completed it.

The AI Enabler learning journey supports managers in applying AI to team practices and people leadership. For technical employees, the AI Builder learning journey is being established within the Certified Engineers (CE) program, which enrolls over 19,000 employees, as a 10-badge pathway covering AI-assisted requirements engineering, automated testing, prompt engineering, custom AI agents, responsible AI and applied product development.

UBS also develops advanced AI capability through hands-on AI challenge programs built around real business challenges, curated datasets and production-grade AI environments. Adoption metrics are reported for these programs. The inaugural 2024 challenge engaged approximately 800 participants across 15 countries and generated nearly 300 AI solutions, while the 2025 Agentic AI challenge attracted more than 1,000 participants within the first 10 days and produced hundreds of solution submissions. These challenge-based programs along with our yearly hackathons complemented formal learning journeys by providing practical, role-specific technical learnings with some winning solutions deployed into business workflows.

Partnerships

Building strategic partnerships is at the heart of our approach to innovation with AI. Our investments and alliances with technology companies, fintechs, and academia connect us to the cutting edge of global AI innovation.

  • We have launched the Oxford – UBS Centre of Applied AI, which focuses on three key research areas (society, the economy, and the future of AI). We have also established the UBS – IDSIA AI Lab, a group-wide research and innovation network that brings together 20 of IDSIA’s top researchers with 100 UBS business domain specialists.
  • We continue to expand our strategic partnerships. For example, working with Microsoft Azure provides us with timely and secure access to emerging AI technologies, joint research opportunities, and shared expertise.
  • We work closely with leading technology companies and select startups to ensure we have choice, resilience, and access to the best available AI models and tools.
