Avoid pension gaps?

As early as possible, but at the latest once you start work and are earning an OASI-relevant income after you turn 18.

First, know your own pension situation. Check whether there are any gaps in your OASI contributions and look over your current pension fund statement, which contains important information about your pension plan. You can find out how to read and understand it correctly at pension fund statement.

The most effective way to strengthen your personal pension provision is with a private pillar 3a pension account. You can deduct payments from your taxable income up to the permitted maximum amount. This allows you to save on taxes today and build up additional retirement capital for your old age.

The maximum contribution to pillar 3a is set annually in October by the Federal Social Insurance Office.

The following applies for 2025:

CHF 7,258 for insured persons / employees with a pension fund.

CHF 36,288 or 20% of net income for the self-employed without a pension fund.

It is deducted from your gross salary to determine your insured (coordinated) salary. The retirement credits are levied on the insured (coordinated) salary. The coordination offset is CHF 25,725 (as of 2024) and corresponds to seven eighths of the maximum single OASI pension.

Pillar 2: For the duration of your statutory maternity leave, you will receive either your salary or a daily allowance based on the Loss of Earnings Compensation Ordinance (EO), amounting to at least 80% of your income up to a maximum of CHF 220 per day.

For part-time work: The insured salary in the pension fund is reduced, which will have a major impact on your benefits in old age. Please note that the coordination offset is often not reduced, which lowers the insured salary even further.

Attention: If your salary falls below CHF 22,050, you are no longer insured under pillar 2 (BVG).

Pillar 3: As long as you pay into pillar 1, you can continue to pay into pillar 3.
