Debt can work for you or against you

Used carefully, borrowing can help build the life you want. But used carelessly, it bogs you down. The trick is to know the difference.

These real-life scenarios and practical tools will help put you in charge. Think of it as your personal training ground for smarter money decisions.

Understanding debt

How to tell whether taking on debt will help you move forward (a bridge) or pull you down (a trap).

Instructions

For each of the five scenarios below, decide whether the debt is a bridge or a trap.

What this shows

Good debt helps you build your future. Bad debt lets you have what you want now – but sends you the bill later.

Scenario 1: The laptop

You’re starting a new job. Your current laptop often crashes mid-task. You use your credit card to buy a solid, mid-range laptop and pay it off within 12 months, as planned.

Bridge

Since your new, reliable laptop helps you do your job and supports your career.

Scenario 2: The weekend break

You spot a cheap flight to Barcelona online and spontaneously book a weekend trip. You pay with your credit card and plan to deal with the cost later.

Trap

The weekend flies by but now you have a credit card payment.

Scenario 3: The apartment

You move to a quieter apartment closer to work. Rent increases, so you use a small loan to cover the move and furniture. You save 45 minutes of commuting per day, you sleep better and feel less stressed.

Bridge

It improves your well-being by reducing stress and saving time, which helps you focus, do your job and lowers the risk of burnout.

Scenario 4: The language course

You decide to sign up for a three-month language course in Vienna. You use a small loan to cover the costs. The experience won‘t raise your salary immediately, but it could help you in international roles in the future.

Bridge or trap

It's a bridge if it supports future career opportunities, but a trap if it ends up being an expensive vacation that doesn't improve your language skills.

Scenario 5: The car

Your parents lend you money to buy a car to get to work, hoping it will get you there faster than public transport.

Bridge or trap

If traffic doesn't slow you down and you can pay your parents back, it can be a bridge.

If you can't pay your parents back because you're suddenly drowning in new, car-related expenses, including the cost of fuel, insurance and repairs, it could be a trap.

Personal reflection

Before taking on debt, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Does this increase my value on the job market, such as my skills, productivity or earning potential?
  2. Does this improve my quality of life, such as my health, well-being or peace of mind?
  3. Does this open up new opportunities, such as career options, personal growth or greater independence?

Understanding budget stress

Check how your budget feels when life throws surprises at you.

Instructions

Read each scenario and ask yourself: could you handle this comfortably? Decide whether it:

  • is a budget buster
  • is a tight budget
  • allows flexibility

What this shows

If you budget smartly and leave some financial breathing room to deal with surprises, rather than relying on debt, you’ll sleep more soundly.

Understanding borrowing

Spot common mistakes and avoid them before they become expensive. There are five different debt traps.

Instructions

Learn about the traps below and decide which one of the five debt traps it is, explain why and check your answers by clicking the respective card.

What this shows

Debt struggles are rarely caused by one big mistake. They start with small decisions. Even if something feels harmless now, it could cost you a lot later.

Personal reflection

  1. Which of these traps could spring up on you?
  2. Which one of the traps above surprised you the most?
