Covid-19 response series: Victor Ochen

While the coronavirus pandemic is affecting the entire world, it perhaps presents most risk for those in developing countries, with poor populations, under-resourced health systems and the risk of unrest. This is exactly the situation described by Global Visionary Victor Ochen, who spoke to us via webcam from northern Uganda.

His organisation AYINET usually works to promote peace and provide medical rehabilitation after the country's long conflict, but is now trying to educate people about the virus and mitigate against further unrest. He told us there could be a revolt against government restrictions because people were so poor they could not stay in without food and "allow their children to die".

Despite these bleak conditions, Victor said one positive was that, "globally society has to realise we are all vulnerable… we are all human beings, it is not right to allow one of us to suffer when we can prevent that suffering."
