The blue economy

Mobilizing capital and partnerships to achieve a sustainable ocean economy

Why do the oceans matter?

Covering over 70% of our planet, oceans contribute around USD 3 trillion a year to the global economy. Yet their true worth to people and planet arguably remains underestimated. They play a crucial role in climate regulation, absorbing excess heat and carbon from the atmosphere. They produce more than half the world's oxygen and  provide livelihoods and essential proteins for over 3 billion people. Yet the threats they face from climate change, pollution, and habitat loss continue to grow.

In this hub, we bring together insights from some of those who are creating innovative technologies, forging partnerships, and crafting financial solutions to help accelerate the transition towards a sustainable ocean economy.

Not all the content included on this hub is available for both retail and institutional clients, with some intended for an institutional investor audience only. Some of the links below will ask you to identify whether you are an institutional client.

Blue streak

By catalyzing private capital, philanthropy can play a key role, helping accelerate the transition to a sustainable ocean economy.

Unlocking the ocean’s potential

We need to position the ocean as a source of solution for the global challenges we currently see in the world: climate change, food security, energy security
Ignace Beguin Billecocq, Mangrove Breakthrough

Healthy oceans are essential to healthy communities, resilient economies and a stable climate. But unlocking their full potential requires more than conservation. It requires investment, innovation and collaboration. This short film explores how philanthropy, finance and partnerships can help scale ocean solutions, from mangrove restoration to broader efforts that create lasting benefits for nature, climate and people.

Sea beyond the blue

An oceans guide highlighting solutions and case studies for philanthropists and changemakers.

Protecting ocean health requires coordinated action on interconnected threats ranging from overfishing and climate change to pollution, habitat loss, and biodiversity decline. Effective philanthropy starts with understanding these systemic challenges and then supporting proven solutions through collaboration, research, advocacy, conservation, and innovative financing. Progress depends on long-term, collective efforts that address root causes, scale successful models, and align ocean protection with wider environmental and social goals.

Tiny bubbles, huge impact

Meet UBS Global Visionary Moleaer, behind a nanobubble technology for improving water quality.

Water scarcity and declining water quality are creating growing pressure for industries to use water more efficiently and reduce environmental impacts. Moleaer argues that nanobubble technology offers a scalable way to address these challenges by improving water treatment, reducing reliance on chemicals, and increasing resource efficiency across sectors such as agriculture and aquaculture. The approach reflects a broader shift toward technologies that link environmental sustainability with operational performance and resource resilience.

Blue nature's value is more than a price

Interview with David Obura, Director of CORDIO East Africa and Chair of IPBES.

In this interview, David Obura argues that achieving biodiversity goals requires moving beyond project-based conservation funding and integrating nature-related costs directly into economic activity, so harm is addressed at its source. While conservation efforts have focused heavily on protecting land and water, he emphasizes that businesses and financial institutions must also deliver by embedding biodiversity into decision-making, improving transparency around nature-related impacts, and reducing the negative effects of production and consumption throughout value chains.

The ocean may not just recover, but thrive

The ocean can recover faster than we had ever imagined. It can bounce back to life. Put simply, we've been given a lifeline. It may not just recover, but thrive beyond anything anyone alive has ever seen.

Towards a sustainable ocean economy - Part 1

Protecting oceans requires better approaches to valuing nature.

The failure of economic systems to fully account for the value provided by oceans and marine ecosystems is a growing challenge. David Obura of CORDIO East Africa and IPBES, and Patrick Nussbaumer of the UBS Optimus Foundation, explore how sustainable ocean stewardship requires more than additional funding, emphasizing collaboration, better financing models, and broader approaches to valuing nature. It highlights the need to move beyond extractive economic frameworks toward models that integrate ecological resilience, cultural values, and long-term sustainability into decision-making.

Towards a sustainable ocean economy - Part 2

How catalytic philanthropy can help scale a sustainable ocean economy.

A key constraint on the transition to a sustainable ocean economy is the gap between available capital and investment-ready opportunities. Featuring UBS's Judson Berkey and Richard Mylles, alongside Chris Gorell Barnes of Blue Marine Foundation and Ocean 14 Capital, the discussion examines how philanthropy, blended finance, and innovative financing mechanisms can reduce risk, demonstrate viability, and help attract larger pools of capital. As investor interest and policy momentum build, the focus is shifting toward scalable models that can support ocean conservation, regeneration, and sustainable economic activity.

GV Special: Thomas Schori, CEO, Tide Ocean Material

Turning ocean-bound plastic into a traceable resource that creates social value

A key challenge in tackling plastic pollution is the lack of economic incentives and waste management systems needed to keep plastic out of the environment. Featuring Thomas Schori, founder and CEO of Tide Ocean Materials, the discussion explores how creating value from ocean-bound plastic can support both environmental goals and local livelihoods. By combining traceability, recycling infrastructure, and community participation, the model reframes waste as a resource while building more sustainable supply chains. The approach highlights the growing importance of circular economy solutions that align commercial incentives with environmental outcomes.

Questions to ask yourself

Protecting the ocean requires all of us - governments, scientists, investors and philanthropists - to rethink how we value and support nature. These are some of the questions our clients and partners often ask themselves when exploring ways that their giving can help restore and protect the ocean.
