Rising Academies – the for-profit education company of Global Visionary Paul Skidmore – has published the final report of a three-year, independent impact evaluation of their schools in Sierra Leone.
Oxford University's Dr David Johnson and PT Jenny Hsieh used computer adaptive software to track the reading and maths skills of a sample of children from Rising Academies against those from comparable private schools and government establishments.
Their findings suggest that Rising students are making much faster progress in both literacy and numeracy; after three academic years, the Rising pupils had made up to 160% more progress.
But perhaps the stand-out achievement was the gains made by girls at Rising Academies. Across the board, girls started behind boys at baseline. In the comparison schools, they fell further behind every year - in fact, girls’ progress was less than half that of the boys. In contrast, Rising schoolgirls actually progressed faster than boys, and much faster (2-4x) than girls in either comparison group.
Paul Skidmore told us: "At a time when there's a lot of talk about why girls' education is important but precious little concrete action, I'm immensely proud of Rising's teachers, school leaders and HQ staff in Sierra Leone for showing the kind of progress that's possible."
