Tokyo, July 1, 2016 – Works from the UBS Art Collection, one of the world's most important corporate collections of contemporary art, are on display this summer at the Tokyo Station Gallery. The event marks the global financial group's fiftieth anniversary of establishing operations in Japan.
UBS has a long and substantial record of supporting the arts, with a focus on enabling clients and audiences to interact with its contemporary art. UBS provides long-term global support to the premier international Art Basel shows in Basel, Miami Beach and Hong Kong, for which the firm serves as global Lead Partner, as well as to the Guggenheim UBS MAP global partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. Earlier this year the firm also hosted 'WOMEN: New Portraits,' an exhibition of new photographs by Annie Leibovitz that were commissioned by the firm, at TOLOT/heuristic SHINONOME, as part of a 10-city global tour.
Zenji Nakamura, UBS Japan Country Head, said: "We are delighted to share this special group of works from the UBS Art Collection with our clients and the public as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations. At UBS, contemporary art is part of our DNA and a means of giving back to the communities in which we do business. With great respect I give my thanks to the curatorial team of the Tokyo Station Gallery for sharing the historic brick walls of this space with us."
The UBS Art Collection comprises more than 30,000 artworks, including paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, video art and sculpture. It includes artworks from a huge range of cultures from across the globe, spanning Europe, North America and Asia, by emerging talent as well as some of the most famous artists in contemporary art history. UBS loans works to international museums to provide greater public access to its collection.
The exhibition at the Tokyo Station Gallery is UBS's first showing of its collection in Japan since 2008, and features the works of 12 artists carefully selected from the collection to be displayed in 12 individual rooms. The approximately 80 works show the international breadth, depth and quality of the UBS Art Collection—from a rare group of works by Nobuyoshi Araki to the great number of pieces UBS holds by the American pop pioneer Ed Ruscha and the British figurative painter Lucian Freud. Featuring outstanding works of art, this exhibition transforms the atmospheric and historic spaces of the museum. The artworks featured include some of the great masters in the Collection, artists that are rarely seen in Japan, as well as significant new acquisitions, such as work by new Brazilian star Rivane Neuenschwander.
Featured artists are: Nobuyoshi Araki (1940–, Japan); Anthony Caro (1924–2013); Sandro Chia (1946–, Italy); Chieh-Jen Chen (1960–, Taiwan); Lucian Freud (1922–2011, UK); David Hockney (1937–, UK); Isaac Julien (1960–, UK); Rivane Neuenschwander (1967–, Brazil); Tsuyoshi Ozawa (1965–, Japan); Mimmo Paladino (1948–, Italy); Susan Rothenberg (1945–, USA); and Ed Ruscha (1937–, USA).
