The HNW opportunity
How UBS is redefining scalable advice
How UBS is redefining scalable advice
In this conversation, Bill Carroll, Head of HNW Strategy, discusses why the $1M–$10M segment has become the most compelling growth story at UBS and how our new Business Enablement model is putting that opportunity directly into the hands of our Advisors.
Q: There’s a perception in the market that UBS is "UHNW only." How are we changing that narrative for Advisors looking for their next home?
Bill Carroll: That perception is a legacy we are actively outgrowing. The reality is that the $1M to $10M HNW segment is currently the primary engine of our firm’s growth. We aren't just "opening the door" to these clients; we’ve completely rebuilt our infrastructure to make serving them seamless. When a recruit looks at UBS today, they shouldn’t see a firm that only serves the ultra-wealthy, they should see a firm that has finally brought institutional-grade scale to the HNW market.
Q: What is the "HNW Business Enablement" model, and why does it matter to an Advisor’s day-to-day?
Bill Carroll: It’s about removing friction. Historically, an Advisor might have felt that serving the $1M–$10M segment required too much heavy lifting. Our Business Enablement model changes that. We’ve lowered capital minimums, launched scalable CIO led UMAs, and introduced Client Insight Hours to replace the administrative burden of traditional briefings. We are giving Advisors the "operating leverage" they need to scale their practice across the entire wealth spectrum without sacrificing the quality of the advice.
Q: You’ve been very vocal about the "generational wealth transfer." How does this strategy position our Advisors to capture that?
Bill Carroll: It’s the single biggest opportunity in our industry. We’re seeing a massive transition of wealth within privately held businesses, and that wealth doesn't start at $50 million, it starts in that HNW sweet spot. By sharpening our focus on the $1M–$10M space, we are helping our Advisors build the relationships today that will define the UHNW practices of tomorrow. You don't wait for the wealth to arrive; you grow with the client.
Q: You’ve been leading a 12-city roadshow to bring this strategy directly to the branches. What are you hearing from the field?
Bill Carroll: The feedback is that Advisors want to feel that leadership is in the trenches with them. The roadshow, where we bring our CIO and Wealth Planning SMEs directly into the branches, isn't just a series of presentations; it's a partnership. We want our Advisors to know that this isn't a top-down mandate. It’s an investment in their ability to win in their local markets.
Q: What is the bottom line for an Advisor considering a move to UBS right now?
Bill Carroll: If you are an Advisor who feels capped out or constrained by your current firm’s limited resources, UBS is the place where those constraints disappear. We’ve created an ecosystem where you have the flexibility of a boutique firm and the sheer power of a global leader. We’re committed to the HNW space because we know that’s where the future of this industry is being written. If you want to be part of that growth, there’s no better time to join.
