The Art Basel fair returns this December to iconic Miami Beach, bringing together 277 galleries from around the world for a celebration of Modern and contemporary art. The show also welcomes 25 new galleries to its roster, and two-thirds of the line-up represent North and Latin America.

The 'Meridians' sector, where artists can push their imaginations beyond the traditional art fair booth, will this year bring together 19 voices from various cultures to explore how we inhabit our world. Highlights include UBS Art Collection artist Gabriel de la Mora’s work from the series 'Ignea', which features materials appreciated by the Mesoamerican peoples for their symbolism and usefulness, and four trophy sculptures by Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke which reflect on the representation of power.

Focusing this year on celebrating Latin America, the 'Conversations' program will bring together 35 thought-leaders for a series of live debates and panel discussions – including Singer-songwriter, producer, and activist Chance the Rapper, local museum Directors Silvia Karman Cubiñá of The Bass and Franklin Sirmans of PAMM, and art collector and philanthropist Estrellita Brodsky who was featured in our Collecting Works series.

In the UBS Art Studio, we’re collaborating with ARTNOIR for a presentation of works by a diverse group of artists including Anthony Akinbola, Sonia Gomes, Melissa Joseph and Nari Ward. Curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, the exhibition showcases how each artist uses dynamic and accessible materials to explore personal memories. The presentation also extends beyond the Miami Beach Convention Center with a large-scale video artwork by Julianknxx projected onto the façade of Soundscape Park WALLCAST.

A further spotlight is brought to art across Miami, with local institutions hosting special exhibitions and events in time for the Art Basel fair – including The Bass’s premiere of a monumental wall mural by UBS Art Collection artist Etel Adnan, as well as an exploration of the politics of representation by Sasha Gordon in her first solo museum presentation at the ICA Miami.
