This exhibition features works from the 1960s to today by international artists who engage with geometric abstraction. This genre of abstract art, which encompasses a range of approaches and concepts, emerged primarily in Europe in the early 20th century. It marked a significant shift from representational to abstract forms and involved the use of basic shapes to explore harmony, rhythm and spatial relationships.
The early pioneers of geometric abstraction influenced non-representational art styles like Constructivism, Bauhaus and later Minimalism and Hard-edge painting. This show highlights the movement’s historical roots and showcases its ongoing impact by including works by key representatives of Swiss Concrete art and the next generation of artists who built upon these traditions. These artists demonstrate the expressive power of linear, simplified forms and shapes in their compositions, while exploring the use of vibrant color. The visual language of geometric abstraction remains relevant in the 21st century as a vital source of inspiration, offering the opportunity for endless possibilities.
