Commissioned by the UBS Art Collection, the installation, ‘Mimimomo Pool’ (2026) by Hong Kong artist Chan Wai Lap takes its title from the Cantonese expression describing a slow, sluggish state — hinting at both unhurried movement (“mi”) and the soothing function of massage (“mo”). The installation, conceived as a site for relaxation, invites visitors to pause, step inside and participate, offering a moment of respite from the intense pace of the art fair in a smaller communal space.
Based on the artist’s drawing 'Dreaming of swimming pools 12' (2024-25), which depicts the globe as a circular, mosaic-adorned pool, ‘Mimimomo Pool’ transforms this imagery into an immersive physical environment. The installation features a carpeted floor printed with the original drawing. The surrounding structure is lined with vibrant mosaic tiling, while built-in electronic massage rollers offer comfort to seated visitors. Brightly colored parasols encircle the pool, adding a playful, leisurely atmosphere to the installation. The work reflects themes of community, connection and shared experiences during Art Basel Hong Kong.
