Beyond representation: Reimagining the way ahead

Watch: Artists discuss representation in the art world and envision a brighter future

At Art Basel in Miami Beach 2022, UBS Art Collection artists Amanda Williams, Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, and Hugo McCloud joined Larry Ossei-Mensah, curator and co-founder of ARTNOIR, to discuss their personal journeys through a changing art world, and how the industry can continue the movement toward a more representative future.

“What does representing mean to you? What does it mean to you today?” Larry Ossei-Mensah opened the spirited conversation, leading the artists to discuss the “burden” of keeping the conversation alive through their work, and highlighting the need for institutions and professionals to take more action. “I would love to get to the point where we were free to just do what we do…” says Hugo McCloud.

Amanda Williams reflected on the artists, such as Leonardo Drew and Angel Otero, “who paved the way” and set “the level of excellence,” while Tunji Adeniyi-Jones commented that the 2022 edition of the art fair “looked very different” compared to his first in 2008.

The talk celebrates the release of the UBS Art Collection’s new book, ‘Reimagining: New Perspectives,' which includes works by artists who offer new and diverse perspectives, inviting us to reimagine our world.
