Art in Action: ‘The Poetics of Dimensions’

Step into the studios of three artists who transform everyday materials into “incredible art pieces”

Travel across New York City with Larry Ossei-Mensah, Curator and Co-founder of ARTNOIR, as he visits the studios of Nari Ward, Anthony Akinbola, and Melissa Joseph ahead of their participation in this year’s presentation in the UBS Art Studio at Art Basel Miami Beach.

Titled ‘The Poetics of Dimensions’ and held in partnership with ARTNOIR, the presentation spotlights a diverse group of artists including Nari Ward, Anthony Akinbola, Sonia Gomes, Melissa Joseph, and Julianknxx.

What unites the artists is their innovative use of everyday materials like shoelaces, durags, and felt, which they employ to create works that challenge norms, inspire creation, and generate dialogue. As Ossei-Mensah says, “What I love is that all the artists are using different materials that are found in their environment, in their community, things that are familiar to us, and transforming them into these incredible art pieces.”

Explore ‘The Poetics of Dimensions’ – presented by UBS and ARTNOIR– from December 6–10, 2023. Curated by ARTNOIR co-founder Larry Ossei-Mensah with the support of curatorial assistant Kiara Cristina Ventura, the presentation spans two locations – the UBS Art Studio in the Miami Beach Convention Center and a video work projection at Soundscape Park WALLCAST on 17th Street.

Also join us for a live conversation with artists Anthony Akinbola, Melissa Joseph, and Julianknxx, moderated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, on Friday, December 8 at 11am EST in the MMBBC Auditorium or watch it from anywhere here.
