The European Commission launching an excessive deficit procedure against Italy could be a good thing, helping the government design better economic policies, says Andrea Montanino, chief economist of Confindustria , the confederation of Italian industries. Overall economic performance has been lacklustre, but productivity at medium-sized Italian enterprises is higher than in Germany, highlights Montanino who spent five years at the IMF in Washington, and before that was a Director General at the Treasury Department in Rome, as well as an economist at the Economic and Financial Affairs Directorate in the European Commission in Brussels.
