Debit cards: Automatic updating services

International card organizations (Visa and Mastercard) require the issuers of debit cards (hereinafter “Card”) to offer updating services (Visa Account Updater and Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater, respectively).
The purpose of these updating services is to provide automatic updates of Card details, including Card number and expiration date, that certain merchants and service providers (hereinafter “Merchants”) have archived for the purpose of making payments for recurring services or pre-authorized payments (e.g. online services, subscriptions or ticket apps) if a Card is issued with a new expiration date. Merchants who accept these updating services, enjoy smooth processing of Card payments even after the cardholder has been sent a Card with a new expiration date. This also eliminates the need to manually update the expiration date with the applicable Merchants.
In addition, the update services also ensure services in connection with the secure processing of payments with mobile payment solutions (with smartphones, wearables, digital wallets, etc.), even after a card has been issued with a new card number or expiration date.
UBS Switzerland AG transmits the Card number and the Card’s expiration date to the international card organizations for these updating services. International card organizations are entitled to involve additional data processors. The international card organizations and the additional data processors process this data in Switzerland and / or abroad (including countries which may not have adequate data protection). However, appropriate measures are always taken to protect client data, and the data processors are obligated to ensure appropriate data protection. In particular, the international card organizations forward the Card number and the updated expiration date via their worldwide networks to Merchants and providers of mobile payment solutions that support such an updating service, and to other entities involved in the updating services (such as acquirers).
The data communicated to, or received by, the international card organizations can be processed by them for their own purposes and in accordance with their own privacy policies (see visa.com and mastercard.com) in Switzerland and abroad (also in countries which may not have adequate data protection).
For an exhaustive list of the purposes for which Mastercard independently processes the transmitted card numbers and expiration dates, please refer to Section 3.10 of the Mastercard Rules (https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/about-mastercard/what-wedo/rules.html; available in English only).

The purpose of updating services is to automatically update card details, including card number and expiration date, that have been retained by merchants and service providers (hereinafter “Merchants”) and providers of mobile payment solutions if a credit or prepaid card (hereinafter “Card”) is issued with a new expiration date or, in the case of mobile payment solutions, a card is issued with a new card number. Merchants and providers of mobile payment solutions who accept these updating services enjoy smooth payment processing even after a Card with a new expiration date or a new card number in the case of mobile payment solutions has been issued. This eliminates the need for the cardholder to manually update the details that these Merchants or the providers of mobile payment solutions have archived.

Cardholders often provide Card details to Merchants or providers of mobile payment solutions from whom they repeatedly buy products or services and pay with a Card. This includes, without limitation:

  • transportation service providers (e.g. Uber);
  • providers of ticketing apps for public transportation;
  • online merchants of clothing, shoes, electronics, etc.;
  • subscription services (software, antivirus programs, etc.);\
  • providers of film services, download services, etc. (such as Netflix);
  • digital wallets.

This depends on your contract with the Merchant or the provider of mobile payment solutions. UBS Switzerland AG does not know which Merchants you have instructed to hold your Card details.

International card organizations (Visa and Mastercard) require the issuers of Cards to offer updating services (Visa Account Updater and Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater, respectively).

No. The updating service will only work if the Merchant or provider of mobile payment solutions accepts it. Merchants and providers of mobile payment solutions are not required to use the updating services.

Card number and the Card’s expiration date.

UBS Switzerland AG sends the data (Card number and the Card’s expiration date) to the international card organizations Visa or Mastercard. The international card organizations are entitled to involve additional data processors. The international card organizations and the additional data processors process this data in Switzerland and / or abroad (including countries which may not have adequate data protection). However, appropriate measures are always taken to protect client data, and the data processors are obligated to ensure appropriate data protection.
Merchants and providers of mobile payment solutions who accept the updating services can access this data held by the international card organizations and automatically update the expiration dates for Cards that they have archived. Providers of mobile payment solutions who accept the updating services can also update the card numbers that they have archived. This makes it possible to smoothly process payments to these Merchants or providers of mobile payment solutions even after replacing an expired Card. In the case of mobile payment solutions, this can also be guaranteed if a Card with a new card number has been issued. The international card organizations also send the data to other parties (acquirers, etc.) that participate in the updating services, or these parties access the data on the international card organizations’ servers.

The data (Card number and the Card’s expiration date) used for the updating services enables smooth, uninterrupted payment processing whenever a Card with a new expiration date is issued (due to a Card renewal, etc.) as long as you have instructed a Merchant to archive your Card details.
The data is also used to ensure that tokenization services for securely processing payments made with smartphones, wearables, digital wallets, etc. can continue to be used, even after a Card with a new expiration date or a new card number has been issued.
For an exhaustive list of the purposes for which Mastercard independently processes the transmitted card numbers and expiry dates, please refer to Section 3.10 of the Mastercard Rules (https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/about-mastercard/what-we-do/rules.html; available in English only).
