On May 7, 2016 at the Shanghai Tower, as a premier partner of TEDxShanghai 2016, UBS presented a stellar line-up of global speakers to share their perception of the beauty of “Balance” through their life stories. The event saw some 2,000 guests coming under one roof to gain an insight into the spiritual journeys of these 23 speakers from different walks of life.
Cesar Jung-Harada, the pioneer in ocean robotics, explained how to create harmony and seek balance among nature, mankind and technology using his inventions and design concepts.
Alfie Lin, renowned for his floral masterpiece at Hangzhou Fuchun Resort, shared his thoughts on floral design, beauty and life. In his words: “Beauty is being true; beauty is to be yourself… I believe that only when you trust each other, conform to nature, beautiful things will be born – and that is life!”
Ami Vitale, National Geographic photographer, spoke about her experiences of war, violence and conflicts, as well as the wild animal kingdom. She hoped that people would pay more attention to beautiful and positive things to find the “balance”.
Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, ethnic Indian dancer, presented his key message for the audience in a captivating collaboration with two-time Grammy award-winning musician Dana Leong: “Life is a balance of our final form.”
Karen Chen, president at UBS (China) Limited, said in her speech during lunch at the grand event: “As a bank with more than 100 years of history and being the biggest wealth management institution, UBS must also find the right balance between convention and innovation… we welcome you to visit our Shanghai branch and exchange views!”
Apart from the speeches, TEDxShanghai also arranged a series of forums focusing on various realms and workshops with well-known artists. The themes included New Generation and Family Wealth Management, Entrepreneurship and Incubation, Joy of Body and Mind, Fashion, Photography and Travel and Craft and Public Art.
At the New Generation and Family Wealth Management forum, Wei Wei, Director for Asia Pacific at UBS Optimus Foundation, along with Roger King, entrepreneur and professor of family business, finance and governance, Calvin Tsao, Principal Architect and Co-founder of Tsao & McKown Architects and Creative Director of Octave, as well as Daniel Zhang, Modular Architect, explored topics surrounding family offices and family business succession. Wei Wei noted: “An effective charity could establish a culture of cohesiveness within the family while contributing to society.”
It is our hope that these speakers’ interpretations of “Balance” will inspire our creativity in discovering new concepts worth putting into action.
