Q4 equity outlook

What’s next for inflation, tapering and growth?
by Max Anderl, Head of Concentrated Alpha Equity

Inflation - the other side of the coin

  • Inflation is finally here and prices of consumer goods have spiked up.
  • Finally central banks’ push for inflation was successful but consumers seem to dislike it and are delaying purchases, as shown by the falling consumer sentiment indices already in the US and UK.
  • In Europe, governments seem equally averse to inflation and are desperately trying to interfere by regulating surging energy prices ahead of the winter months, causing disruption in the utility sector.

Tapering - monetary growth should slow as tapering kicks in

  • Markets will have a harder time digesting the reality of reduced stimulus.
  • The Federal Reserve hinted that asset purchases may be scaled back as soon as November.
  • Going forward we expect monetary growth globally to slow as tapering kicks in.

Economic growth - leading indicators of global economic growth are already slowing down

  • Signs of slowing economic growth are already evident in major economies like the US, Europe and UK.
  • Higher energy prices will put further strain on the global recovery.
  • Despite these headwinds we still expect decent economic growth overall.
