Sofia

The Soviet Union clearly left its mark on the Bulgarian capital, nestled midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. City signs are written in Cyrillic, and orthodox churches (such as the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral) with their distinct onion shaped cupolas can be admired around the city. On Vitosha Boulevard, pedestrians can enjoy a cup of coffee or shop for international luxury goods while taking in an atmospheric view of Vitosha mountain.

Did you know…
The uniquely colored ceramic pavement covering much of Sofia's central district was specially produced in a brick factory near Budapest over 100 years ago. Today the expression "yellow bricks" has come to mean city center.
