UBS Junior Talent application process

Cordelia from our Junior Talent team shares her top tips on how to secure a Graduate program at UBS.

Are you interested in the Investment Bank or Asset Management? Or how about Group Technology, Group Risk Control, Group Operations or Human Resources? No matter where you are in your academic career, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about our businesses. And you could learn what having a career with us might be like.

With applications opening soon for all of our Graduate programs across UBS, we thought we'd share some top tips for succeeding at different stages of our application.

Part 1: Online application stage

1. Do your research and make your application UBS specific

2. What makes us different from our competitors? Really think about why you want to work for us and think about our core values and offerings as a bank.

3. Look through our seven core competencies to help prepare a competency based answer for each, think about the following;

  • What the situation was
  • What action you took
  • What the outcome was

4. We want to know about all your work experience, any part-time / summer jobs – even if they are not directly related to the role you are applying to. This says a lot about your personality.

5. Numerical testing – don’t fall at the first hurdle. It's always worth practising the numerical test and making sure you're familiar with the content. Our numerical test wants to measure your understanding of tables and also numerical data.

Part 2: Situational judgement tests (SJTs)

1. The situational judgement tests are measuring your reactions to certain scenarios and measured against the UBS core competencies. Following on from part one it is crucial you know about our seven core competencies and values to understand what we will be looking for.

2. Practice makes perfect. To help you familiarise yourself with the format of a SJT make sure you find some practice tests before sitting the real thing.

3. Think about our company and role you are applying for and what sort of candidate you think we are looking for. Are we looking for team players for this specific role? Or are we looking for independent workers?

4. The point of the SJTs is to not only make sure that you fit with our culture, but also to see whether we fit to you.

5. Our SJTs are not timed tests so don't feel rushed when answering the questions. Take your time and make sure you're comfortable with the response.

Part 3: Video Interviewing

1. First impressions count! This is the first time an employer will see and hear you speak. Make sure you speak slowly as nerves can get in the way and result in you speaking too quickly.

2. Dress smartly for the interview and consider this the same as a formal face to face interview. Make sure you are somewhere where it's quiet and you won't be disturbed.

3. Make sure you have checked your webcam and microphone so you know they work and they play back correctly afterwards.

4. Try and speak to the camera and not to the screen as this makes the viewer feel like you are speaking directly to them.

5. Think about how you might come across through your gestures and remember to smile.
