Q. Your role/team (仕事内容について教えてください)

I joined UBS in 2015 as a GTP in the Hong Kong office, after participating in the summer internship program in 2014. I joined the Global Equity Finance (GEF) Distribution team looking after stock loan and delta one products in Asia ex-Japan markets. After spending a few months in Hong Kong, an opportunity came up for me to do a rotation to our Tokyo office. What started off as a short-term assignment turned into a permanent relocation – I am now a local employee in the Tokyo office, working in the same GEF team with a focus on the Japan market.

The work we do on the GEF desk is both market- and client-facing. Our day-to-day tasks include servicing hedge fund clients on their stock loan requests and providing them with financing solutions. We also evaluate short sell trends in the market, monitor risk, and manage internal inventory within the firm. We work closely with many other teams on the floor, giving me a great opportunity to build my network.

Q. Why did you choose UBS? (なぜUBSを就職先に選んだのですか?)

I really enjoyed working with the people here when I did my internship two years ago. I think it is important that you can find mutual respect and appreciation with colleagues, because they will be who you spend most time with. On top of that, the firm is dedicated to educating and investing in young talent—my cross-regional rotation is one example. That is why I think this is the right place for me to launch my career in the financial industry.

Q. What drives you at work? (働く上での原動力となっているものを教えてください)

I am motivated simply by wanting to be better at what I do, and by learning as much as I can from this role. The equities business is dynamic, so being in this environment requires me to stay focused and constantly challenge myself. It also makes me more inquisitive, as there is something new to learn every day. I find it important that people around me are equally motivated and driven, which makes it much more enjoyable to collaborate with colleagues in both in Tokyo and overseas.
