Is Japan in a world of its own?
If the world economy is enjoying a party, it seems that Japan was not invited. The Nikkei 225 Index is up less than 0.5% year to date, compared to an 8% rise in the Euro Stoxx 50 and a 6.7% increase in the S&P 500.

Economics reigns supreme
Aside from US President Trump's threat of "major, major conflict" with North Korea, the market focus is on US first-quarter GDP growth. This is subject to the normal (seemingly ever-rising) margin of error with which economic data is afflicted. It is also subject to the normal "curse of Q1" – the inability of US statistics to seasonally adjust.
Is “poll” vaulting the right strategy for investors?
Investors had a tough time on 24 April…if they sat out the first round of France’s presidential election holding cash. The vast majority of growth-sensitive assets posted gains as centrist, pro-EU candidate Emmanuel Macron reaped the highest vote total among the four contenders, including second-place finisher and far-right anti-euro candidate Marine Le Pen.
