A Rio restaurant launched by David Hertz and acclaimed Italian chef Massimo Bottura during the Olympic Games has celebrated its first birthday.
Refettorio Gastromotiva combats food waste, malnutrition and social exclusion by providing healthy, seasonal meals for vulnerable people; so far, 18,000 individuals have been served 54,000 plates of food.
It also functions as a restaurant-school with young Gastromotiva graduates cooking surplus ingredients, alongside invited chefs.
While disadvantaged people are given a free dinner, the plan is to serve lunch to the wider public, under the concept: "Pay for lunch, leave dinner paid."
The Refettorio team say: "We are convinced that serving brings as much dignity as being served!" If you fancy giving it a go, you can volunteer on the below link.
