The farming (r)evolution

Osnat Michaeli, Infarm co-founder & Chief Brand Strategy Officer

We're dedicated to creating a future where local super fresh produce is available for everyone.

  • Infarm say they are re-inventing farming supply chains to "usher in a new era of agriculture". They grow fresh produce close to consumers' point of sale by replacing large rural farms with a network of modular, vertical farms designed specifically for urban spaces.
  • They use machine learning and IoT (internet of things) technology to control the farms using sensors via the cloud from their Berlin headquarters. The platform receives more than 50,000 data points during each plant's life cycle, which it uses to constantly optimize conditions allowing each plant to grow better than its predecessor.
  • Food production and transportation account for over a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions1. Food is also more likely to perish due to long journeys – and waste is responsible for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions2. Infarm say their modular approach reduces food miles, uses 95% less water and 75% less fertilizer than soil-based agriculture. Their goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in the next few years.
  • They have already partnered with more than 30 major retailers, including Amazon Fresh, M&S, EDEKA  and Whole Foods. Currently, more than 1,200 farms across 10 countries are harvesting more than half a million plants every month. By 2025, they expect to become the largest distributed farming network in the world.
  • Infarm is the first vertical farming company to receive Global GAP certification3 for the highest standards of agricultural food production and delivery. They were recognised in Fortune's Impact 204, and a finalist in the food category of Fast Company's World Changing Ideas Awards 20205.
