Scaling surgery with AI

Jean Nehme, Co-founder & CEO, Digital Surgery

My vision is to ensure surgery becomes a consistent, data-driven process that scales and is sustainable

  • Five-billion people do not have access to safe surgical services, according to a Lancet report1. Even when patients receive timely access to surgery, outcomes can vary. In fact, every year, more people die within 30 days of surgery from complications than from all causes related to HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined2.
  • Plastic surgeon by training, Jean left clinical practice to find a solution to help deliver consistent surgeries, at scale. He believes good outcomes are mostly down to a surgeon’s decision-making capabilities rather than his/her technical skills or the equipment used.
  • His company, Digital Surgery3, helps health professionals measure and visualize exactly what is happening during operations, with advanced computer vision, machine learning, data analytics and education. Its flagship education platform, Touch Surgery4, is an interactive surgical simulator, which lets surgical staff learn the steps of the procedure, test their knowledge and rehearse before stepping into the operating room. Its effectiveness has been validated in 15+ studies.
  • More than four-million people have downloaded the app around the world. The company also works in developing countries such as Tanzania and Cambodia to understand the local training needs and build appropriate training, for example content that works on slower mobile connections.
  • Digital Surgery aims to bring real-time decision-supporting tools, to assist surgeons and surgical teams, to the operating theatre in the very near future.
