Fashion for education

Cameron Saul, BOTTLETOP and #TOGETHERBAND co-founder

The new horizon for the luxury fashion industry is about marrying design with social and environmental impact.

  • Cameron Saul co-founded BOTTLETOP in 2002 as a way of using sustainable design to provide jobs and funds for health education in developing countries. It started with a best-selling collaboration with Mulberry featuring a bag made from bottle tops that Saul found while teaching in Uganda.
  • BOTTLETOP pioneered the use of upcycled materials to make luxurious, aspirational products with artisans in challenging parts of the world. It also innovates in its use of eco fabrics, while its London shop is the world's first to have an interior made from 3D-printed recycled plastic.
  • It now produces collections with artisans in Brazil, and empowers young people through its foundation in Brazil, Kenya and Ethiopia, which support education on sexual health, drug and alcohol abuse and gender equality.
  • It has collaborated or partnered with brands including Narciso Rodriguez, DKNY, the Rio Olympics and BAFTA, and has been endorsed by the likes of Anna Wintour, Kofi Annan, Jessica Alba, Bob Geldof and Bill Clinton.
  • In 2019, UBS and BOTTLETOP joined forces to launch #TOGETHERBAND1, which aims to raise awareness of the 17 UN2 sustainability goals. The friendship bands – in each goal's color - are handmade in Nepal from upcycled ocean plastic and decommissioned firearms. High-profile ambassadors include David Beckham and Naomi Campbell, while former Unilever boss Paul Polman and Global Visionary alumnus Dr George Daley among the experts.
