Meet Peter Tabichi, one of the world's most decorated teachers
Dedication to students and community sets Peter apart as an educator. Out of more than 10,000 teachers, he won the Global Teacher Prize for 2019, awarded by the Varkey Foundation. Peter is also #TOGETHERBAND's expert for UN Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable education for everyone.
Peter Tabichi was born in rural Kenya. And he's seen firsthand the difference education can make. Since 2016, Peter’s been working at a local school in Kenya where he teaches science and math. A staggering 95 percent of his students are living in poverty. The student-teacher ratio is 58:1. And, the school has one computer that’s shared between teaching and administrative staff. Despite these incredible odds, his students have gained both national and global recognition for important work on STEM-related projects including winning the UN SDG Award at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the US.
To further help his students and his community, Peter gives away 80 percent of his monthly income to those in need.
How education overcomes obstacles
Peter believes that face-to-face contact and social activities are essential elements of a learning environment. He created a Peace Club uniting children from seven different tribes to foster harmony and relationship building through socially responsible activity and collaboration. With everything that's happening in the world right now, addressing deep-rooted community issues and bringing people together can have a monumental impact.
"Education is not just about academic success. It is also about learning the values of community and harmony," says Peter.
As the expert for Goal 4, Peter believes quality education is an imperative investment in future generations and that children will only realize their full potential when they are equipped with the skills to succeed. Problem solving, teamwork, collaboration, innovation and independent thought – these are the skills that will conquer the challenges of tomorrow.
"#TOGETHERBAND is built on the idea of sharing and spreading a message for change. Because together we can achieve more than as individuals. I am very honored and excited to be working alongside UBS and BOTTLETOP who share the same goal of doing everything we can to achieve quality education for all by 2030," says Peter.
UBS is proud to stand with Peter in support of Goal 4 as we continue to drive change and work to provide better learning opportunities across the world.
The campaign was co-launched by UBS and sustainable fashion brand BOTTLETOP to raise awareness and support for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 bands to represent each of the goals and they're ethically made with sustainably sourced materials. Each pack contains one to wear and one to share.
