Economics and Policy RBNZ Outlook

Q&A with RBNZ Assistant Governor Christian Hawkesby

12 Nov 2020

"The RBNZ has introduced the funding for lending program as part of a package that could ultimately also include negative interest rates" says Christian Hawkesby, Assistant Governor and General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The February monetary policy statement will be an opportunity to assess the program's effectiveness in terms of lowering the commercial banks' lending rates, and to determine whether further action might be needed, according to Hawkesby, who before joining the RBNZ was an asset manager in New Zealand and spent 9 years in senior positions at the Bank of England in London.

Christian Hawkesby spoke to Beat Siegenthaler of the UBS Knowledge Network on Nov. 12, 2020.
