US consumer survey Is US consumers' outlook improving?

UBS Evidence Lab asked 1,000 US consumers how they have been affected by Covid-19. The latest wave was conducted on April 24-26, 2020. Earlier waves were carried out on April 9-13, March 26-28, and March 19-21.

  • There was a significant improvement in employment retention sentiment, with an increase in the share of people who expect their situation be remain stable in the next month. The largest increases were in higher-income bands and the Northeast.
  • However, there was a decline in the share of respondents who expect to save more in the coming months, especially in the Midwest and West.
  • Concern over product availability has diminished, especially for bathroom and personal care products.
  • This is reflected in reduced intention to stock up, especially for bread, cheese, and coffee.
