Multi-sector How is the Coronavirus impacting US hospitals?

In response to Covid-19, hospitals have been deferring elective surgeries and delaying capex. UBS Evidence Lab asked 30 hospital CEOs and CFOs how they were responding to the situation. The survey was fielded on March 27-31.

  • About half reported that total surgical volumes were down over 50% y/y in the previous two weeks.
  • Another 10% of respondents expected volumes to be down >50% y/y within the next two weeks.
  • The surgical procedures being deferred the most were orthopedic implants, endoscopies, colonoscopies, and bariatric surgeries.
  • Half of hospitals surveyed are delaying investment in surgical robots, and over 40% are delaying IT and radiology/imaging equipment capex.
