Covid-19 has led to social-distancing measures and rising unemployment, which are taking a heavy toll on US retail.

  • The Nowcasting model shows US aggregate retail sales excluding autos and gas may have declined 6.0% m/m (seasonally adjusted) in March.
  • This contrasts with the previous several years, when retail sales growth generally fluctuated within a narrow range.
  • Previously, the largest decline in the period examined had been 1.4% in December 2018.
