Consumer How has the Coronavirus impacted US saving and consumption?

Social distancing has led to a downturn in retail, restaurant and bar visits while increasing the share of income consumers are saving. The latest survey gauges how consumers' outlook changed between the week ending March 19 and March 26.

  • 15% of consumers expected to visit retail stores more often vs. 10% the previous week. The share who said they would visit less often fell from 47% to 33%.
  • 23% said they did not intend to visit retailers at all, up from 15% the previous week. 
  • While the vast majority of consumers did not plan to order alcohol from a bar or restaurant, there was a slight rise in the share who expected to increase consumption.
