We had a chat with Harry, the Co-Chair of the London Pride Network, about our Pride employee network and what UBS does to support diversity and inclusion across the company.

Hi Harry. How did you first become involved in the Pride network?

I met a few committee members at various events organised by the group and I just expressed an interest in helping out. This eventually led to me joining the steering committee (the colleagues who organize the activities) and I was recently appointed as co-chair.

Why is the network so important?

Our goal is to champion diversity. We want to help nurture a company culture where differences are celebrated and all employees feel respected and empowered. Through an active agenda spanning all LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual plus others) topics, we aim to raise awareness, eliminate misconceptions and help drive change in both UBS and our communities.

Has UBS created a supportive and inclusive environment?

The culture at UBS is more open and inclusive, for sure. This has been driven by support for diversity and inclusion by senior management, who attend events such as the Pride in London Parade, and host ‘Lunches with Leaders’ events where they share their experiences. The message is clear – it’s ok for you to bring your whole self to work.

Do you collaborate with other organisations and networks?

Absolutely. In May we partnered with the organisation Headspace. We hosted a very special event with Welsh international rugby union referee Nigel Owens (MBE) as part of Mental Health Awareness week. We are also collaborating with networks outside UBS. For example in June we are partnering with ACI UK and Interbank LGBT Forum to discuss the business case for diversity and inclusion in the financial sector.

What is the UBS Pride network responsible for?

Our biggest task is organising UBS's participation at the Pride in London Parade. This is our third year entering the parade and the number of colleagues who want to join is growing every year. Other than that, we have a few more events in our agenda on a yearly basis such as ‘Lunches with Leaders’ and our annual treasure hunt. We also have various ad hoc events such as raising awareness on transgender topics on International Transgender Day.

Anything else you would like people to know?

Sign up for the network and also get involved! Anything from suggestions for future events to volunteering your time to help us is always welcome.
