UBS sponsors Munch exhibition at Complesso del Vittoriano in Rome
UBS, one of the world's leading financial services firms, is sponsoring the "Munch 1863 - 1944" exhibition at Rome's Complesso del Vittoriano, between 10 March and 19 June 2005.
The exhibition is under the Patronage of Her Majesty The Queen Sonja of Norway, The President of Italy, the Italian and Norwegian Arts Ministries and is promoted by the City and the Province of Rome and by the Region of Lazio.
In 2004 UBS sponsored the exhibition "Degas: Classico e Moderno" and now reconfirms its long-term commitment to cultural arts by supporting an exhibition that contributes to the knowledge of Edvard Munch's work - a forerunner of Expressionist painting.
The exhibition runs through the creative and human history of Munch, an artist who during his life expressed recurrent obsessive images and themes linked with anxiety, thus showing on the one side a personal condition and reflecting on the other side the broad influence of the cultural environment of those years: from the dramas of Ibsen to the philosophy of Kierkegaard, from Nietzsche to Freud.
The featured works, around sixty oils and fifty engravings, lithographs etc, highlight the complex interior life and the existential angst pervading the body of his work.
Innocenzo Cipolletta, Chairman of UBS Corporate Finance Italia, said: "We are honoured to support Norwegian and Italian institutions in making this important exhibition possible: it gathers a hundred works by Munch loaned from the most renowned international museums and most important Norwegian venues".
