UBS, one of the world's flagship financial firms headquartered in Switzerland, is a name, which has quickly become synonymous with sailing. Since adopting the theme early 2001, UBS has proven its commitment to the sport by building up a global sponsorship portfolio that encompasses sailing at various levels. UBS decided to use sailing as a sponsorship platform because of the synergy between its brand values and attributes and those of sailing, such as partnership, performance, and innovation and due to the level of client interest in the sport.
In explaining UBS's support of and connection to sailing, Marcel Ospel, UBS's Chairman of the Board of Directors, said, Sailing calls for perfect interplay between strategy, tactics, stamina, speed and mastery of state-of the art technology. These key factors, implemented by a highly motivated team, are what carry a racing yacht to success. In the global finance business, they also decide who can sail harder to the wind."
The following activities have established UBS as one of the leading sponsors of professional sailing:
UBS is main sponsor of Team Alinghi, winner of the America's Cup 2003. Alinghi made sailing history by winning the America's Cup and bringing the Auld Mug to Europe for the first time since the event's inception in 1851. Alinghi is lead by Russell Coutts, a three-time winning America's Cup skipper and Ernesto Bertarelli, CEO of Serono. They have assembled a crew of professional and dedicated sailors from 16 countries. In order to launch their campaign for the America's Cup 2007, Team Alinghi and Oracle BMW Racing will compete a series of races in the San Francisco Bay from September 15 to 20. Due to the short and very windy course in the San Francisco races, a fierce competition is guaranteed.
UBS joined Louis Vuitton as one of the four key sponsors of the challenger elimination series for the 2003 America's Cup. The Louis Vuitton Cup was won by Team Alinghi.
UBS succeeded to bring previous America's Cup victors such as Australia II, America 3 and Black Magic to Europe through title sponsorship of the Jubilee Race Around the Island in Cowes, Isle of Wight in 2001.
UBS supported the two yachts of Nautor Challenge as a principle marketing partner during the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001/2002. The yachts were led by veteran skipper Grant Dalton and renowned yachtswoman Lisa McDonald, whose boat was crewed exclusively by women.
UBS also is a partner of the Monaco Classic Week.
