On 23 November 2020, Real Estate & Private Markets (the Real Assets team for UBS Asset Management) hosted an expert panel featuring some of the leading institutional investors in the US to discuss the implications of the US Presidential election on infrastructure priorities and investments. Some of the key points include:
- US policy-makers believe infrastructure is critical in terms of quality-of-life, sustainability, education, healthcare, economic development and jobs. Under a Biden presidency, heavy infrastructure and transportation projects will almost certainly be key to any pandemic economic recovery plan in 2021.
- COVID-19 has only accelerated the need for key transportation spending in infrastructure, especially in sectors such as airports, seaports, roads and other forms of infrastructure which have been severely affected.
- Trends like renewables deployment won’t stop, while investment into various types of telecommunication infrastructure such as fiber, 5G and rural broadband will grow with data usage.
