Swiss pension system Current prospects and future challenges

A UBS study carried out in association with the University of Freiburg im Breisgau reveals: The Swiss pension system in its present form will run into difficulty unless wide-reaching reforms are introduced.

The long-term outlook for the pension system is improving, but the next generation will have to bear the financial burden

The Swiss Federal Government's "Altersvorsorge 2020" reform plans for pensions represent a major step forward in guaranteeing the financing of AHV retirement benefits in the long term. These are the findings of a new study conducted in association with the University of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Switzerland is on the right track, but the proposed measures put the younger working generations at a disadvantage, as they will have even lower pensions to look forward to in the future. The study shows that it will be extremely difficult to overcome demographic challenges without increasing the retirement age for both sexes. There are still no clear answers in this area. One thing is certain: the higher average life expectancy must be taken into account for calculating retirement age and the total period of employment.
