The term equity denotes funds contributed to a company by one or more owners or investors. It means you share in the company’s profits but are also committed to suffering any losses incurred.
Equity can be your own savings, money from family, friends or investors, advances against an inheritance or from cashing in a retirement fund early.
However, we’d recommend you don’t use all your retirement savings as seed capital when you start a business. Starting your own business is always high risk and if things don’t work out you could end up with a big hole in your pension fund.
Business angels are wealthy individuals who provide start-ups with capital as well as contributing their knowledge and valuable networks. This in turn can open the door to further capital. Business angels often support businesses during the development phase and then sell their investment after the first successful surge in growth.
