Formula 1® racing hits new highs in Singapore

UBS was in the F1 spotlight during the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX week in September. Our Global Partnership with Formula 1 provided the opportunity to engage with over 5,000 clients, staff and community partners in Singapore in a variety of unique experiences.

UBS Cycle the Circuit

Ahead of the start of motor racing track activities on the Sunday morning, the popular UBS Cycle the Circuit event took place for the second consecutive year. Led by triple Tour de France Green Jersey winner Robbie McEwen, 150 cyclists, including valued UBS clients, employees and community partners, completed two laps of the 5km Marina Bay Street Circuit. Guests had the opportunity to pick up cycling tips first-hand from the international champion as he set the pace for the group ride.

UBS Cycle the Circuit with David Coulthard

Held for the first time in Singapore, participants from UBS’s 2013 Next Generation programs were invited to take part in the UBS Go-Kart Challenge with F1 legend and 13-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner David Coulthard at Kartright Speedway. Guests had the opportunity to test their racing skills against David - who had a passion for go-karting as a child - after hearing his track tips. Prizes were awarded to the winners. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Women in Motorsport, supported by UBS

Widely known as a male-dominated sport, UBS hosted a forum related to women in the field of Formula 1. Featuring Susie Wolff, F1 Development Driver for Williams F1 and Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal for Williams F1, the business networking event provided inspirational insights from women who have excelled at the global level.

Community outreach

Raising funds for the Singapore Children’s Society, the UBS Racing Simulator Challenge was opened to the public at the One Raffles Quay office lobby. In addition, as a team partner of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team, a full-sized F1 car was on display together with personal racing gear from the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship™, Lewis Hamilton.

Edmund Koh, Singapore Country Head and CEO of UBS Wealth Management Southeast Asia & APAC Hub remarked, "Our Global Partnership with Formula 1 provides us with a diverse range of unique experiences to engage our clients, employees and the community. F1 has a year-round presence and its wide reach of audiences make it an exceptional global platform to reach out to many of our key growth markets in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. As the world’s most prestigious motor racing event, the race has placed Singapore on the global racing map and attracted fans from all over the world. In 2013, we continued to maximize opportunities to entertain and engage our clients and the community in Singapore."

UBS Essentials provides insights from global experts

Over 750 guests attended UBS Essentials, the Mid-Year Outlook event in Hong Kong in July seeking guidance from our guest panelists on the investment landscape for the months ahead. Storylines addressed included US Federal Reserve, Japanese equities, and the underperformance of Emerging Markets and China.

Allen Lo, CEO of UBS Hong Kong, opened the event with a personal account of his own investment success and strategy.

Alex Friedman, Chief Investment Officer, addressed the audience via a video message, summarizing how past investment calls have performed over the last six months. This was followed by an informative and entertaining panel debate, as the varying views highlighted the fact that investment opportunities are not always a ‘one-size-fits-all’ proposition. Identifying investment suitability was the underlining message, depending on an investor’s time horizons and appetite for risk.

The landmark event concluded with an insightful look into the China shadow banking phenomenon by keynote speaker Joe Zhang.

Strengthening our Wealth Management force in Asia Pacific

As further commitment to the region, UBS Wealth Management recently made three new appointments within the senior management team in Asia Pacific.

Former President of the Singapore Exchange (SGX), Gan Seow Ann joined the firm as Vice Chairman of UBS Wealth Management South East Asia and Asia Pacific Hub, while 21-year UBS veteran and former Regional Market Manager of China, Betty Tsui was appointed Vice Chairman of UBS Wealth Management China. Transitioning from UBS’s Investment Bank, Tan Min Lan will lead the Wealth Management Chief Investment Office research team in Asia as Asia Pacific Regional Head of UBS Chief Investment Office, Wealth Management.

Gan Seow Ann

Based in Singapore, Gan Seow Ann joined UBS in August, covering South East Asia and domestic businesses in Taiwan, Japan, China and Australia. In his distinguished career at SGX, he was responsible for developing and growing the community of participants for the stock exchange, derivatives exchange and market access services. He also led the drive to establish SGX as the premier listings venue for IPOs and debt-raising capital. He was actively involved in engaging regulators in the region to enhance the rules framework for the capital markets. Prior to joining SGX, he was Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, responsible for the equities market in South East Asia. Seow Ann’s rich international and regional experience, deep insights into doing business in Asia, as well as his strong relationships with entrepreneurs and business owners across the region will be an asset to the firm and, in turn, our clients.

Betty Tsui

In May this year, Betty Tsui was appointed Vice Chairman of Wealth Management China. In her established career at UBS since 1998, Betty was instrumental in building the Wealth Management business in Taiwan to become a market leader. She later focused on building the China business and was appointed as Regional Market Manager for Wealth Management China in 2007. In her new role based in Hong Kong, Betty will dedicate her full attention to deepening client relationships as well as mentoring key talents in one of the key businesses of Wealth Management in Asia Pacific.

Tan Min Lan

Former Global Head of Macro Strategy Research at UBS Investment Bank, Tan Min Lan joined the Chief Investment Office, Wealth Management as APAC Regional Head in July, located in the Singapore office. Min Lan’s appointment will support the integration of regional investment views with the global asset allocation. Her primary responsibilities involve directing APAC CIO Research and supervising portfolio performance to create quality content and actionable ideas, in line with the CIO House View. Min Lan serves as a member of both the Global and EM Investment Committees, helping to formulate key investment views.

"These newly appointed senior roles across key markets and into our investment research team are a marquee addition to UBS’s already deep bench of talent and further demonstrate UBS’s commitment to strengthening the Wealth Management franchise in Asia Pacific," said Kathryn Shih, CEO of Wealth Management Asia Pacific.
