After years of negotiation, Bernie Ecclestone finally got his wish when Shanghai hosted the Chinese Grand Prix at a purpose-built facility on the outskirts of the city in 2004. Another Hermann Tilke creation, the layout is based on the Chinese sign of 'Shang' meaning 'rising' and has been constructed on thousands of polystyrene blocks on swamp land. It’s a challenging track; there are two long right hand corners that demand a lot from the tyres and one of the longest straights in F1. The venue boasts one of the best track and paddock facilities on the calendar and has hosted some dramatic races in its eight-year history.
