Valentin Haüy & Louis Braille
Valentin Haüy believed that all children had the right to an education. Dismayed by society’s treatment of the blind, he opened a specialised school in 1784. This school would have a lasting impact as it helped lay the groundwork for future education models for the blind.
Amongst the school’s pupils was the young Louis Braille. In a time where little support was offered to the visually impaired, the school was instrumental to Braille’s learning. It was there that Braille developed his system of raised dots - a system that would later become the predominant method of reading and writing for the blind.
