FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO SANTANDER D'ITALIA 2012 (Monza) September 9
Circuit length: 5.793km
Race distance: 306.720km
Laps: 53
As the spiritual home of Ferrari, Monza is always packed to the rafters with Ferrari-mad fans, known as the tifosi. Steeped in history and tradition, the famous Italian track is the fastest on the calendar with an average lap speed of 247km/h. Drivers use full throttle for 80 per cent of the lap. It used to be an all-out sprint until the organisers introduced three chicanes in 1972 to prevent the cars from slipstreaming each other. The scene of some of F1’s most glorious as well as tragic moments, Monza has a unique magic. The most memorable race in recent times was 2008, when 21 year old Sebastian Vettel mastered the wet conditions in his unfancied Toro Rosso car to become the sport’s youngest ever winner.
