While its layout doesn't lend itself to overtaking, the Hungaroring has often delivered memorable races since its debut in 1986. Damon Hill won his first grand prix at the track in 1993 and was on course for a shock victory in 1997, driving for the backmarker Arrows team, when a hydraulic problem robbed him in the closing stages. Located in an amphitheatre setting, the track offers spectacular vantage points for fans and as the race is held in the height of summer, it’s usually very hot and the track surface is dusty. The track usually improves a lot as the rubber goes down over the course of the weekend and the lap times drop.
