Basketball icon Yao Ming attends UBS Greater China Conference 2014

Basketball superstar, Yao Ming, joined UBS Group Chief Executive Officer, Sergio Ermotti, and close to 1,700 delegates on the opening day of the 14th annual UBS Greater China Conference (GCC) in Shanghai.

“We are delighted to have an athlete of Yao Ming's standing with us today. Yao is, of course, well known throughout his career for his pursuit of excellence as well as being someone who is unflinching in the face of challenge – all of which are values that lie central to the ethos at UBS. But he is more than just a formidable athlete, he also has a generous heart," said Mr. Ermotti. After ending an illustrious basketball career in the NBA, Yao set up the Yao Ming Foundation to help rebuild schools destroyed in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Yao, who is also an entrepreneur and investor, has participated in many charitable fundraising events during his career, most notably In the NBA's off-season in 2003, when he helped raise around US$300,000 to help stop the spread of SARS. In September 2007, he held an auction that raised US$965,000 and competed in a charity basketball match to raise money for underprivileged children in China.
